Tunisia during the period of French colonial rule. In memorable images, the film tells the story of the special friendship between Hamida, an orphaned shepherd boy, and Renaud, the grandson of a French plantation owner. One day Hamida falls into a river while searching for a sheep. Renaud rescues his friend, but Hamida falls dangerously ill with a lung infection.
